I find myself saddened by the news of the past 24 hours. I’m sure many feel as I do.
For a 32 year old male idiot to purchase 6 tons of fertilizer 6 months ago, put together a car bomb similar to the McVeigh bomb years ago in Oklahoma City and blow up a government building in Norway killing at last count 7 people is bad enough. But then to leave that scene he created and go 1 hour to a children’s camp on an island by boat, disguise himself as a police officer and say that he was there to protect them from harm after that bombing that he spearheaded – is worse. But to ask those 12 to 17 year olds to huddle in a circle and he just starts firing for 90 minutes – killing them one by one until at least 84 (last count) are dead and strewn all over that remote island is hideous! Norway’s most cruel punishment for a conviction such as this is only 21 years in jail. So this criminal/killer could walk free by the time he is 50 to 55 years of age. That is incomprehensible.
Then Amy Winehouse at age 27 dies overnight in her London home. Her trials and tribulations with substance abuse made as much or more news during her short lifetime than her talent. She recorded a song highlighting her issues in the megahit – “Rehab” but couldn’t stay in rehab long enough or couldn’t get to the core of her problem herself to recover from it. As I write this, there is no official word as to the cause of death but the autopsy is being rushed. Not many will be surprised if officials determine that she died from an overdose. It saddens me that this person (and so many others much less known) couldn’t reverse her (their) mess. You see examples like her, Cobain and the still living Lohan that can’t get control of their issues. One can only wonder what other future can they have but to disintegrate right before our very eyes and many, like Winehouse, do! I assume many are not surprised at this death of this young woman. That in itself is sad! But all that I keep hearing in my head today after this announcement are the words from her hit song she wrote and admitted it was autobiographical: “They tried to make me go to rehab but I said ‘no, no, no’!”
And then there are those so called politicians in Washington and the pieces of the puzzle in the NFL. My goodness, could one write for days about those issues? I won’t! I remember a phrase my parents would say during my childhood: “Money is the root of all evil!” While some might not agree with that, it appears money is the root of these problems along with other issues. I keep wondering: “can’t we just get along!?”
