On one hand, as a grandparent known as Poppy, I get excited about this day. Then on the other hand, it’s a little sad! All in all though, there is some big time joy in our family today because our Maggie started kindergarten. I’m happy because she is so excited about Ms. Riggs her new teacher, her classroom, some new friends and a tad leery about the “rat in a cage Poppy that Ms. Riggs says we are going to hold! YUCK!”

Selfishly though, I’m also a little sad. You see, our little red-haired Maggie is growing up way too fast. I remember hearing her first cry outside the door of her Mom’s delivery room almost 6 years ago. I held her in the sunlight when she came home from the hospital so she could ward off jaundice. As she has gotten older, she and I have had dates for Otter’s Chicken, Sweet CeCe’s yogurt and other fun places plus we’ve even gone to the movies with Mimi as of late. I told her today – we think it’s great she started kindergarten but she is growing up ever so fast and that’s not so good! Her response: “Oh Poppy!”

You see .. Maggie is very special as my other 6 (almost 7) grandchildren are. But Maggie has a ‘one up’ on the rest because she is actually our 2nd born grandchild. Maggie has a sister who lived for 9 months in her Mom’s belly and on the way through delivery, she didn’t make. We met Elle as a stillborn child almost 7 years ago. That was a devastating day that still brings tears to my eyes as I write this. Tough stuff! Therefore, several months later when Courtney and Grant brought us Maggie and we heard that first cry, there was unspeakable joy for her Mimi and Poppy. Maggie came bouncing into this world and has been everything 2 grandparents could certainly be proud of. She’s bright, personable, funny, extremely creative and from what we can see, her future is very, very bright. Her parents have invested well in her! Oh sure, money is in that investment but most of all, they have invested their TIME and LOVE in this young girl. Maggie has benefited greatly by these loving parents as a child and we see fruits of their labor every day.

I ran by for about 10 minutes to visit with Maggie this afternoon on her front porch. We sat in the swing, talked about her day and found out about that rat! She couldn’t tell me enough and I knew she was happy beyond words. Then I looked over at my daughter, Courtney, who looked absolutely beaten with the work and emotion of the day. She confesses she held it together when Maggie entered her new school alone this morning but the ongoing work and care by this great Mom to not only Maggie, but to Finn (age 2 1/2) and Carolina age (9 1/2 months) takes its toll. But you never hear one complaint from these loving parents. They love their kids and needless to say, we are enormously proud of all of them.

This grand parenting thing is all they said it would be and more! Today I write about Maggie. Tomorrow, I could have material about Finn, Carolina, Jack, Lily Kate, Charlie or soon to be our latest addition – Baby White. He is a very little boy right now due to enter this world – August 16. His stinking parents know the name but have chosen to keep us all in suspense until birth! We’re over the suspense of that! 🙂 But as I write this post for my blog, my son Christopher just text-ed me saying that the midwife just indicated that Little NO-NAME White is already 7 1/2 to 8lbs and he’s not here yet! Poor Kajsa! And I need to increase the weights I’m using in my workouts! 🙂

So Maggie? I love you young lady! I am so proud of you and consider it the utmost privilege to be your Poppy! Lucky me! I get to sit on the sidelines and sometimes get to even enter the game to share life with you. What a blessing you are and how blessed I truly am!
