Our kids weren’t with us this year for Thanksgiving today! This occurs every other year when they spend time with the other 1/2 of their family. We often have traveled during this week each “non-kid” year but this year, my wife and I found ourselves at home and really not complaining about it. We always miss our kids and the numerous grandkids we are blessed with but a quiet, reflective Thanksgiving isn’t so bad either.
So what should we do? My wife did her great research and for Thanksgiving lunch – we ended up with about 1/3 of the rest of Nashville at the renowned Loveless Cafe for lunch. They offered a traditional turkey lunch with all of the fixin’s and we thought – this could work. Boy! It did! We kept saying during lunch – ‘we’re not sure we could have cooked this at home this good”. Home cooked turkey with dressing, perfectly seasoned green beans, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, those famous Loveless biscuits with jams and preserves. YUM! Then homemade peach cobbler and coconut cream pie for dessert. Yep – we threw our normal nutrition rules out the window but watched our portion sizes so we could control it a little. We couldn’t have prepared the meal any better if we had cooked that big lunch ourselves and the Loveless cooks may have beat us in spots. AND we didn’t have the hours in the kitchen with prep hours getting it all together. We swapped all of that for an approximate 40 minute wait and were eating Thanksgiving lunch at 11:30AM. We paid a total of $30 for us both! YES! We may have ourselves a bi-annual tradition going here.
Then off to the movies …. another holiday treat we enjoy and have for years. Today, we chose Happy Feet Two. We loved the first one and knew this one should be fun and it was! The highlight for us were the duo of krill voiced by Brad Pitt & Matt Damon. You could just imagine them recording those voices and Damon even sings with his best krill impression. It’s a funny, family movie with good music to boot! Just what we needed on this enjoyable Thanksgiving Day!
Then, we headed back home and kept asking – “Shouldn’t we be doing something, have something planned? Are we missing something here?” We quickly decided it was nice to have NO PLANS and just have a nice quiet evening at home reading, resting and writing this blog. No complaints here!
Happy Thanksgiving and here’s hoping you have a wonderful holiday season ahead. It’s always a great time of year if we don’t rush through it and miss the real meaning of the season.
