OK … I saw this article this AM. Although I can agree with a little of it, the majority of it – I’m not so sure!
I spend a lot of my not at work time reading about efficiency, productivity, organization etc. I’m just a big believer in WORKING TO THE MAX when I work and PLAYING TO THE MAX when I play. (Tweet this Quote!) So finding ways and tools to help me maximize my work and play has always been important to me. Much of this behavior probably came from my radio days when I was a broadcaster in the 1970’s. I had 2:36 for a record to play (yes record – no CD’s then). Then a :30 commercial followed by a station ID and it had to fit perfectly together in order for me to cut to network news at exactly the top of the hour. You just find ways to do that in your afternoon drive-time program. Guess I’ve worked at ways to do that in my real-life over these many years too.
This article I read today from the ToDoist.com blog caught my eye and it maybe has merit to some but for me, not so much. Check it out for yourself. Here are the 5 distractions they think could help you.
- Look at Photos of baby animals. RIGHT! Me increase productivity by looking at a puppy or baby hippo! I might say – “cool” or “nice” or maybe even …”how sweet!” but help my productivity?? Don’t think so.
- Stare at a screen! They suggest a visit to www.Calm.com! Now this isn’t bad … it could relieve stress and force you to take a few big breaths .. so I’ll give that a little love on helping my productivity.
- Use at least 5 social networks! REALLY? I want to accept what they are saying but I think ONE social network KILLS PRODUCTIVITY and steals valuable time away from you during your day much less 5. I don’t think so!!
- Take a 10-minute power nap! I’ve known that to work for some but for me, if I take 10, I lose 30 that night because I did. Then I’m tired the next day because I didn’t sleep so well … For some this might work – for me .. NOPE!
- Chew a piece of gum! REALLY? You have got to be kidding me! So I’m in the midst of a compacted day, trying to meet deadlines and return calls. I stop to have a piece of gum. Then I’m chewing it on my next conversation? Makes me think of Fonzy on Happy Days … “Heyyyyyyyyyyy – how ya doin!? – chomp, chomp! Not sure my client would appreciate smack – smack in his/her ear!
Now don’t let me deter you from reading the article. Judge for yourself if these tips could help you or not. Just don’t send me your baby animal pix along with a pack of gum and expect me to double my sales in the next month!
Here’s the blog post from a GREAT company that I use daily – ToDoist.com. Their versatile to-do/task list is one of the best in the marketplace I have seen. I live in it! But their blog which is always good too just came up a little short for me today!
